Kinds of abstract words: processes

Abstract words which are indispensable for all kinds of academic thought are words which name processes.

When we are children, we are taught History through stories - King Alfred burning the cakes or Napoleon's retreat from Moscow.

Grown-up History is about historical processes, such as industrialisation, slavery, revolution.

Children's Geography is about different places in the world and how people live in climates different from our own.

Grown-up Geography is about geographical processes, such as glaciation, climate change, the water cycle.

The words for processes are usually (but not always) formed by adding an ending to a simpler word.

industry + al + is(e) + ation = industrialisation

slave + ry = slavery
