About Styles of language
As human beings grow up, we unconsciously master a huge variety of different styles of speech. We have different styles for speaking to babies, to shop-assistants, priests, our grandmothers, our University lecturers, our fellow-students, policemen etc. For English-speaking people this means a facility in different styles of spoken English.
If we live in a society which sends its children to school, we also learn to recognise and use different varieties of the written language.
In Task 1 on the next page you will find a few examples of written styles. See if you can match the style in each example.
