Abstract problems and solutions

Academic work tackles problems of an abstract kind to which theoretical solutions may be found. For example:

Situation: In the United Kingdom people grumble about the weather because it is unpredictable. However, we are used to quite limited and regular variations in temperature and rainfall.

Problem: Recently, however, the rise in temperature and the frequent occurrence of violent storms have taken most people by surprise.

Solution: We have to take seriously the scientists' diagnosis of these freak conditions as the effects of global warming,

Outcome: and we have to be prepared to make changes in our way of life in order to halt this process.
