Chaining

Sometimes Problem - Solution texts explore different solutions to a problem. For example

Situation: I depend on my washing-machine to keep my family's clothes in good order. We are all engaged in different sports, so the machine is in use every day. It is a good machine and it never gives any trouble.

Problem: I turned on the washing-machine the other day and nothing happened.

Solution 1: I checked the trouble-shooting page in the handbook. It told me to check that the machine was plugged in. I did so. It was plugged in.

Outcome: This was not the reason the machine did not work.

Problem: The machine still does not work.

Solution 2: The handbook told me to check that I had pressed the ON/OFF button. I did so. I had pressed the ON/OFF button.

Outcome: This was not the reason the machine did not work.

Problem: The machine still does not work.

Solution 3: The handbook told me to check that the porthole door was firmly shut. I did so and found that the door was shut.

Outcome: This was not the reason the machine did not work.

Problem: The machine still does not work.

Solution 4: Check the fuse. I did so and found that the fuse had blown. I replaced it.

Outcome: The machine started.
