Task 7: Where does 'Solution' begin?

Where does 'Solution' begin?

1. The inhabitants of Brittany, a province in the North-West of France, have traditionally depended on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods. 2. In the second half of the twentieth century the French Government gave the farmers large subsidies to increase pig production. 3. The farmers were very successful and now provide a quarter of France's pork products. 4. However, pigs produce a lot of waste products, which are drained into the rivers, causing enormous pollution. 5. These effluents have poisoned the mouths of the rivers effectively putting an end to fishing and oyster-farming in those areas. 6. The population of Brittany has always taken their drinking water from the rivers but it is no longer safe to do this and they are having to buy bottled water. 7. In order to remedy this situation the Government has invested in purification plants, in which bacteria eat the polluting substances. 8. The water is then safe for drinking. 9.However, there is a public outcry in Brittany to cut down the pig farming, which causes the pollution in the first place.
